Botswana Champions Sustainable Resource Leadership at Mining Indaba 2025

Cape Town, South Africa - February 2025

Botswana reaffirmed its position as a continental leader in responsible mining and sustainable resource development at the 2025 Investing in African Mining Indaba, held in Cape Town from 9–12 February 2025.

Under the theme “Botswana: Pioneering Sustainable and Innovative Mining in Africa,” the nation’s delegation led by the Ministry of Minerals and Energy (MME) and the Minerals Development Company Botswana (MDCB) delivered a compelling vision for inclusive growth, diversification, and global competitiveness in the minerals sector.

A New Era Beyond Diamonds

In her address, the Minister of Minerals and Energy, Honourable Bogolo Kenewendo, outlined Botswana’s bold evolution from a diamond-centric economy to a diversified mining powerhouse at the forefront of the global energy transition.

“We are no longer just a diamond story,” she said. “Botswana is actively pursuing opportunities in critical minerals such as lithium, graphite, and uranium resources that will power the clean energy future.”

The Minister reaffirmed that Botswana’s resource development strategy is anchored in Vision 2036 and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring that the nation’s mineral wealth translates into jobs, industries, and long-term prosperity.

“Our mission is to ensure that every ounce of mineral wealth translates into opportunities and enduring prosperity for our people,” she added.

MDCB Showcases Botswana’s Investment Potential

Appointed by the Ministry to lead Botswana’s participation, MDCB played a central role in positioning the country as a trusted and forward-looking investment destination.

The Botswana Pavilion drew attention from international investors and industry leaders eager to engage with the country’s mining ecosystem leaders. Through this showcase, MDCB demonstrated Botswana’s strengths:

  • A stable political and economic environment
  • Strong governance and transparency
  • And a deep commitment to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles.

These factors continue to cement Botswana’s reputation as a preferred destination for ethical and sustainable mining investments.

“Our role at Mining Indaba is to communicate that Botswana is not just resource-rich, but investment-ready,” noted the Chief Executive Officer, Matome Tsholetsa Malema. “Through responsible partnerships, we aim to unlock long-term value for investors and citizens alike.”

Innovation and Collaboration Drive Botswana’s Vision

Botswana’s pavilion stood out for its focus on digitalisation, ESG agenda, and youth empowerment, highlighting the country’s dedication to building a modern, technology-driven minerals sector. Delegates held strategic meetings with global investors, technology partners, and policymakers to explore collaboration in critical minerals, green mining, and downstream beneficiation.

These engagements underscored Botswana’s ambition to not only participate in the global energy transition but to lead it through innovation and local value creation.

A Unified National Presence

Botswana’s participation at Mining Indaba 2025 represented a coordinated national effort a partnership between government, MDCB, and key private-sector players. Together, they delivered a unified message: Botswana is future-proofing its mining industry through sustainability, innovation, and inclusive growth.

This collaborative approach demonstrated how strategic alignment across institutions can amplify Botswana’s voice on the global stage while attracting investment that supports the country’s development priorities.

As the global mining community accelerates its shift toward sustainability, Botswana continues to set the benchmark for ethical resource governance and transformative leadership. The country’s success at Mining Indaba 2025 reaffirmed its standing as a model for how nations can responsibly harness mineral wealth for the benefit of current and future generations.
