Botswana reaffirmed its leadership in responsible mining and sustainable resource development at the 2025 Investing in African Mining Indaba, held in Cape Town from February 9–12.
Under the theme “Botswana: Pioneering Sustainable and Innovative Mining in Africa,” the country’s delegation, led by the Minister of Minerals and Energy (MME) and coordinated by Minerals Development Company Botswana (MDCB), presented a bold vision for inclusive growth, diversification, and global competitiveness in the minerals sector.
A New Era Beyond Diamonds
Speaking at the Mining Indaba, Minister of Minerals and Energy, Honourable Bogolo Kenewendo, highlighted Botswana’s evolution from a diamond-driven economy to a diversified mining hub at the forefront of the global energy transition.
“We are no longer just a diamond story,” she said. “Botswana is actively pursuing opportunities in critical minerals such as lithium, graphite, and uranium — resources that will power the clean energy future.”
She further emphasised that the country’s resource strategy is anchored in Vision 2036 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring that mineral wealth directly contributes to job creation, industrialization, and long-term prosperity.
“Our mission is to ensure that every ounce of mineral wealth translates into opportunities and enduring prosperity for our people,” she affirmed.
MDCB Showcases Botswana’s Investment Potential
MDCB showcased the nation’s investment readiness and commitment to responsible resource management.
The company reiterated that Botswana’s stable political climate, strong governance structures, and adherence to ESG principles continue to make it a preferred destination for ethical and sustainable mining investments.
Innovation and Collaboration Drive Botswana’s Vision
Botswana’s pavilion stood out for its focus on digitalisation, ESG reporting, and youth empowerment within the mining sector. Delegates engaged with global investors, technology firms, and policymakers to explore partnerships in critical minerals, green mining solutions, and downstream beneficiation.
The event provided a platform to deepen regional and international collaboration, advancing Botswana’s ambition to build a modern, technology-driven minerals industry that supports economic diversification and local participation.
A Unified National Presence
Botswana’s presence at Mining Indaba 2025 was a coordinated national effort led by the Ministry of Minerals and Energy, supported by MDCB and various public and private sector partners. Together, they presented a cohesive narrative: Botswana is future proofing its mining industry through innovation, sustainability, and inclusive growth.
As the global mining community looks toward a more sustainable future, Botswana continues to lead by example demonstrating that responsible resource management is not just good business, but a national imperative.
