Acting Chief Finance Officer

Mr. Mafoko Makhao, FCCA

Mafoko Makhao is a Chartered Accountant with over 15 years of progressive financial leadership experience spanning mining and investment, banking, telecommunications, and public services. He currently serves as Acting Chief Finance Officer at Minerals Development Company Botswana (MDCB), where he provides strategic financial oversight across the organisation's investment portfolio, subsidiary performance, and corporate reporting.

Prior to his elevation to this role, Mafoko headed MDCB's management accounting function, leading financial reporting, business planning, and investment due diligence across the group's subsidiaries. His broader career includes senior finance roles at Bank Gaborone and Botswana Fiber Networks, where he managed treasury, risk, and financial operations for a telecommunications infrastructure provider with regional reach through the WACS and EASSy submarine cable systems.

A hallmark of Mafoko's career has been his ability to modernise finance functions through technology — leading the ERP migration at Botswana Fiber Networks that integrated HR, Finance, Inventory, and billing systems, and automating management reporting to improve turnaround and accessibility. He also played a key role in negotiating a cost-saving submarine cable partnership with a Namibian operator that cut interconnection costs by 60%.

Mafoko holds Fellowship status with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and is currently pursuing an M.Sc. in Finance and Investments through the London School of Business and Finance, alongside a financial modelling qualification from Wall Street Prep.
